There's an Adult for That
It’s been warm recently. Climate change, global warming. Dunno. Trees are budding, tulips are popping up. Yesterday I was pushing my son on our tree swing.
But it snowed last night. I know this because when I looked outside this morning I saw it; all crisp, clean, and cold. Pristine, perfect. White. It reminded me of my childhood.

Snow?! What?! Aw yeah!
My daughter, seven, is the same.
“Snow?! What?! Aw yeah!”
Also, she is still willing to put on snow pants when my wife or I ask/say. It’s not not cool yet.
But I digress.
She and I tromped out to the bus stop. Shisss shisss shisss. There were a couple of other kids in snow pants as well, all first grade or younger. They stomped out their names in the snow as we waited for the bus.
I chatted with some of the other moms and dads. It was only natural to talk about the weather — because, you know, we were literally standing in about three inches of it.
The bus came and we waved goodbye to our kids. We continued to talk about the weather. Specifically the weather that was yet to happen.

“Hold up,” I said to the two remaining at the corner. “How do you know what the weather is going to be?”
“I check my app at night,” said the dad.
“You mean, like it’s just something you do?”
“Yeah.”
“Like make sure the door is locked, set the alarm, and check your weather app?”
“Yeah, pretty much.”
“And you,” I asked the mom.
“Well, I saw it snowed this morning, so I checked to see what the weather is going to like over the next few days.”
“So was the snow a surprise this morning?”
“No, not really. I mean, I knew it was supposed to snow.”
I peered inward…
Am I just too lazy to scroll further down the app?
🤔
Or am I not an actual adult?
🤔
Ok. Probably a little from column A, a little from column B…
🤔
Actually, I’m not too lazy to scroll further. I’m too lazy to even open the app. I hardly ever look at the weather app…
🤔
Wait. Have I just grown accustomed to the idea that EVERY day is a weather surprise?
🤔
Not unlike, say, a child…
😳
They were both looking at me like I was looking at them. With modest incredulity.
“Ok,” I said. “You guys are like adults then?”
“Well, yeah.”
“Yeah.”
NOTE TO SELF: Set the alarm, check weather app, scroll... #adulting
