A New Jersey woman has fired a lawsuit against a world famous candy company, claiming she was unfairly dismissed after her company found out she is a lesbian.
The Star-Ledger reports that 46-year-old Theresa Kwiecinski is suing Mars Chocolate North America for wrongful termination. Kwiecinski, who worked as a commercial manager for external manufacturing, claims in the suit that her Mars Chocolate colleagues began treating her differently during a 2011 work conference in Florida after they were introduced to her partner and daughter.
Upon returning from the Florida event, Kwiecinski says supervisors handed her an unreasonable work load and was ignored when she asked for help, The Express-Times reports. But the suit also cites earlier issues from 2010, too. Kwiecinski says she was described as performing "below expectations" after being hospitalized and unexpectedly needing to go on maternity leave.
The unfair reviews continued, which lead to Kwiecinski's eventual dismissal, the suit claims.
"The complaint speaks for itself," attorney William Koy Jr. is quoted by The Express-Times as saying. "My client is very disturbed for how she was treated at Mars, and we look forward to her day in court." Both the Star-Ledger and the Express-Times say Mars Chocolate North America officials have thus far declined comment.
Earlier this month, an assistant principal at an Ohio Catholic school was placed on administrative leave and eventually fired after penning a blog on his personal website in which he stated that he "ethically, morally and legally" believed that gay couples should be allowed to marry.
