Switching seasonal-style gears is going to be a cinch this year if you start by embracing one of autumn’s most blogged-about fashion trends: luxe layering. We partnered with ModCloth to bring you the very best clothing combos of fall, from pairing a cozy turtleneck with a sheath dress to the more extreme measures of sweater-on-sweater weatherproofing. Based on expert advice, the following seven simple layering formulas will not only streamline your workwear wardrobe, but also bring finesse to those midweek commute-to-work and work-to-play sartorial transitions.

1. Turtleneck + Miniskirt + Booties
Make the most of a flared miniskirt while battling wintry weather by topping the wardrobe staple with a thigh-grazing turtleneck and trench coat. “A longer turtleneck with a skirt and tights during the day can morph into a mini-dress over tights without the skirt [by] adding a belted jacket over it after work.” says Los Angeles stylist to the stars Eric Himel. “Pair both the daytime and nighttime look with the same bootie!"
2. Turtleneck Dress + Belt + Loafers
“Turtlenecks are so versatile and I’m totally loving them this season. For a fun and warmer fall look, try layering a ribbed turtleneck underneath a blazer and cinch the whole look together with a wide belt. After work, ditch the blazer for happy hour with the girls,” Los Angeles–based celebrity stylist and author Melanie Lacob recommends. Add comfortable, office-friendly loafers and a chic clutch to complete the ensemble.
3. Turtleneck + Cardigan + Knit Skirt
What better way to embrace autumn’s brisk temperatures than by channeling the trend du jour, monochrome, layered sweaters? “Think of the fitted turtleneck like you would a cami — start by layering a boyfriend-style cardigan over it for a chic look at the office and take the cardi off for a sexy date night look afterward,” Lacob suggests. “Try pairing this with wool culottes or a high-waisted skirt! For an effortless look, stick with the same color palette from head to toe. Foolproof and oh so chic.”
4. Patterned Shirtdress + Sweater
Leap into autumnal work attire with a playfully patterned shirtdress and a snug sweater. The ensemble is simultaneously chic and chill-proof. “This versatile look can be styled down with a sweater and sneakers, or dressed up for the office,” says Lizz Wasserman, Fashion Director of ModCloth. “When the weather cools down, you can pair your shirtdress with a turtleneck and tights for cozy comfort. Complete the ensemble with a high, lace-up boot and a sophisticated, on-trend choker.”
5. Blazer + Belt + Trousers
This season, eschew amorphous, figure-camouflaging layers in favor of a belted blazer that emphasizes curves. “Belts are back and better than ever — and such an easy and inexpensive way to stay on trend,” Lacob reveals. “They instantly polish up an outfit, and they’re perfect for layering on top of jackets, blazers, long sweaters and, of course, pants! Get a mix — no need to only stick to leather … try a suede or metallic one, too.”
6. Body Conscious Dress + Leather Jacket + Boots
If you’re dressing for the office in a rush, take this snug yet stylish and simple combination for a test drive. “A perfect silhouette for the office and a priceless piece for your closet is a form-fitting bodycon dress. Since it’s for workwear, go with a length that’s appropriate and figure flattering that hits right above the knee,” stylist Angela Fink says. “If the weather doesn’t permit then make sure you bring a leather jacket to add a bit of edge.”
7. Cape + Turtleneck + Miniskirt
Fight fall’s dropping temperatures like the fashionable heroine you are by rocking a cape for the ultimate autumnal style statement. “As temperatures drop, layer[ing] sweaters is a great way to add warmth, depth and visual interest to an outfit,” New York City-based stylist Samantha Brown shares. “Make sure the knits are of different proportions: a thinner sweater on the bottom with a chunkier knit on the top. This looks best with a fitted or ribbed v-neck layered underneath a cardigan or open front sweater, or a turtleneck or crew layered under a poncho or cape.”

Fall is the ideal time to revamp your office and after-hours ensembles by stocking up on trendy layers. This season, ModCloth has the perfect picks to keep you chic and cozy from your morning coffee to happy hour cocktails.
