I’m known for capturing haunting images of abandoned places around the World and nothing has shocked people more than my images and videos of abandoned shopping malls scattered across the United States. Personally, there is no other place I’ve documented that is more creepy than abandoned malls and the abandoned Metro North Mall in Kansas City is by far the creepiest place I’ve ever step foot in.

Dead malls are slowly turning into abandoned malls and are spreading across America like a wild fire, particularly in the Midwest, where economic decline has left these areas in complete ruins. In addition, Americans are now faced with multiple shopping options including Amazon and online shopping that is making it hard for shopping malls to survive. As a result, several malls that were built during the 70's mall boom, are becoming abandoned and forgotten.

In 2015, I told NBC's Today Show, which interviewed me inside an abandoned mall in Ohio, that these abandoned malls were at one time a communal space and that before there was cell phones and the internet shopping malls were a place to not only go to for shopping but to communicate with others and meet friends. This poignant view about these abandoned malls really resonated with people in America, who all started reminiscing about their personal memories of the malls that I have photographed. The response was overwhelming and emotional and those personal experiences were shared in my book entitled 'Black Friday: The Collapse of the American Shopping Mall' in 2014.

I enjoy showing people what it looks like after a mall becomes abandoned and often portray these abandoned malls as apocalyptic ruins that will chill you to the bone. I believe sharing my images are imperative to raising awareness to some of America’s true ills and social media is a viable tool for me to do that. I want Americans to see what is happening to their country from the comfort of their suburban homes and smart phones.

The mall is currently in the early stages of demolition. The area will be revamped into an outdoor shopping area with its anchor store Macy’s that will remain intact. Enjoy this one last look inside the creepiest mall in America.
