Between his starring role on This Is Us and appearance in Bad Moms Christmas, actor Justin Hartley certainly has a packed schedule lately. So, when it comes time to Thanksgiving, the 40-year-old has one thing on his to-do list: nothing. The newly married hunk and father opened up to me as part of his partnership with Royal Canin to reveal what he has planned for the holidays and encourage pet owners to take precautions to ensure all pets remain safe and healthy during this festive time.

Q: Why partner with Royal Canin?

JH: Well, first of all, I am a dog lover and we have two dogs that we adopted almost a year ago. So, for me, it was sort of an easy fit. Keeping our dogs Memphis and Gracie healthy is one of the most important things I can do as a pet owner. By partnering with them, I’m able to share tips I’ve learned on simple ways to avoid hazards that may face our four-legged friends this holiday season.

Q: What’s the most surprising thing you learned?

JH: I never even thought of Christmas ornaments being a problem, but they are. Dogs will eat anything. They don’t care that it’s food, sparkles. Oh, and don’t feed your dog beer.

Q: Speaking of the holidays, what are some of your favorite holiday traditions?

JH: Decorating the tree at Christmas time. My wife and daughter and I get together and put it all together. My mom has given all of us Christmas ornaments for every Christmas we have been alive, so the tree is getting full of these ornaments. They are getting older but they all have specific meanings to them and so it’s kind of a cool tradition, storytelling and decorating the tree around the holidays. It’s nice.

Q: Do you have a favorite ornament in particular?

JH: I like anything with a Santa Claus on it, I think, you know? It’s pretty festive. I like the festive ones.

Q: Obviously, you got married recently. Do you have any sort of new traditions that you’re incorporating into your holiday?

JH: We haven’t talked about any except for the fact that this is the second year in a row that Chrishell and I have been in New York for Thanksgiving, so we might start making Thanksgiving in New York a thing. I guess, if we do it next year, it will be a tradition – it will be the third one in a row, so we will see. We don’t really have any traditions other than the decorating. But, a friend of ours has an open house on Christmas Eve, where he just leaves the front door open and people come and go as they please. So, we sort of zip by there and see all of our friends.

Q: Sounds like you have a busy holiday season!

JH: We actually try to take it pretty easy during the holidays. We are busy the rest of the year, so, for me, it’s the time when the office is closed, nothing is shooting, and my phone is not ringing. It’s just sort of a good day to be sort of at ease for a few days. There’s nothing better!
