'This Means War' R-Rating Upheld By MPAA

'This Means War' R-Rating Upheld

Last weekend during the NFC Championship game on Fox, you couldn't go one commercial break without seeing a spot for the upcoming Twentieth Century Fox romcom-cum-action thriller, "This Means War." Oddly, considering the film is due out in a few weeks, every trailer ended the same way: "This film is not yet rated." About that: the Motion Picture Association of America ratings board upheld its decision to give the film an R-rating.

Starring Reese Witherspoon, Tom Hardy and Chris Pine, the Valentine's Day release is about two spies who fall in love with the same woman. The trailer paints "War" as a goofy, low-stakes action comedy, but apparently the MPAA wasn't upset about the violence or explosions, but the sex. The R-rating was given because of "some sexual content," which sounds about as serious as whatever you see on "Desperate Housewives" or "The Good Wife" on a weekly basis. Perhaps the sexiness factor of Hardy and Captain Fine was too much for the ratings board to handle?

"This Means War," from director McG, arrives in theaters on Feb. 14. Leave the kids at home, apparently.
