Graphene, and its somewhat mythical categorization as one of the strongest materials in the world, has long been the stuff of sustainable design dreams. Thanks to Spanish producer Graphenstone, these dreams are becoming a reality with the introduction of the world’s first Graphene paint.

First reported by Dezeen, who spoke with Graphene director Patrick Folkes, the introduction of Graphene paint, which has already been used successfully on several commercial and restoration projects in Europe, will have enormous implications for energy-saving in the heating and cooling of homes because it effectively acts as a source of sustainable heat energy.
“When used on interior wall surfaces, rather than heat being radiated through the walls, the graphene within the paint captures the heat,” Folkes explained to Dezeen. “It then conducts the heat through the paint and across the whole Graphenstone-painted surface of interior walls. This enhances the insulation measures used in buildings by slowing heat conduction through walls and out of buildings.”
As if that weren’t enough for the eco-friendly consumer, the new paint will also be composed of 98 percent pure lime — a resource endemic to Graphenstone’s Spanish roots — whose ability to absorb carbon dioxide can purify ambient air. The paint, distributed through the Graphene Company, is available in indoor and outdoor varieties.
