Ex Says Accused Murderer Thomas Gilbert Jr. Feuded With 'Hypercritical' Father Over Money

Accused Millionaire Murderer Had Strained Relationship With Slain Father, Ex Says

A 30-year-old Princeton-educated socialite accused of killing his hedge-fund founder dad “couldn’t do anything right” in the eyes of his father, his ex-girlfriend says.

“He talked a lot about his dad and how mean he was to him and how nothing was good enough,” Anna Rothschild told the New York Post.

Thomas Gilbert Jr. is accused of shooting his father, Thomas Gilbert Sr., Sunday in a dispute over his docked allowance, police said.

Gilbert, Jr. received $3,000 a month for rent and living expenses, but when his father decided to cut the sum by a measly $200, his son allegedly turned to murder.

Detectives told ABC News that the young man shot his father in his bedroom with a .40 caliber Glock 22 and tried to make it look like a suicide.

"The gun was resting on his chest with his left hand covering it," NYPD Chief of Investigations Robert Boyce said at a press conference. He described it as a "staged crime scene."

Rothschild also told the Post that the accused killer had a strained relationship with his father and had told her that "his dad was hypercritical of him."

Law enforcement sources told the newspaper that money was a continuing source of tension between the Ivy League-educated son and his Wall Street mogul father:

"[Gilbert Sr.] had been giving him $2,400 a month for rent and $600 for spending money, and he was cutting [the spending money] to $400... They had argued about it before."

The paper also cited unnamed sources who said that Gilbert Jr. is also suspected of setting fire to a rival's house in the Hamptons.

ABC News reports:

Public records show that Tommy Gilbert was arrested in Southampton in September for second degree criminal contempt for allegedly violating an order of protection, though no specifics about the restraining order were released.

Gilbert Jr. appeared in court Monday but did not enter a plea. His next appearance is scheduled for Jan. 9.
