A gathering of thousands filled the streets of Mexico City on Wednesday to protest the disappearance of 43 students in the state of Guerrero last month.

Parents of the victims headed the march, followed by dozens of organizations, union members and others demanding that the government of President Enrique Peña Nieto find the students and solve the case.

Protesters carried images of the disappeared while chanting, "Vivos se los llevaron, vivos los queremos" -- Spanish for "They were taken away alive, we want them back alive."

The aspiring teachers were last seen in the southern town of Iguala on Sept. 26 after a confrontation with local police. Some of them are presumed dead after badly burned and dismembered bodies were found in nearby shallow graves last week.

The tragedy, which the United Nations has called "one of the most terrible events of recent times," has caused public outrage worldwide and sparked similar public demonstrations across the country.
