Volcanoes, formed by magma rising from the Earth's crust, are formidable forces of nature. They've existed on Earth far, far longer than we have. The first volcanic eruption to be recorded in detail was from Mount Vesuvius, Italy, 79 A.D. -- and it remains one of the few active volcanoes in Europe today.
