There have been some dramatic changes to the legislation of cannabis in the United States over the last few years. Although it’s welcome news for people who enjoy a smoke, the laws vary from state to state. Growing it for personal use in some states is legal yet in others it’s still a felony.

Most people are aware of the laws according to the state that they live in, but I spoke to Hydroponics company owner David Lu to get some tips on legally growing cannabis.

What states have legalised marijuana?

Recent legal changes in California, Massachusetts, Maine, Nevada mean that soon it will be legal to grow marijuana there. Colorado and Washington have legalized recreational marijuana for some time now but you still need to get a license to legally set up shop.

In what states is it legal to grow your own marijuana?

In Washington, only medicinal users and licensed growers are allowed to grow plants with medicinal users allowed to grow up to 15 plants for personal use.

In Colorado, individuals are allowed to grow up to 6 plants at once with up to 3 of them flowering at one time and plants must be kept in an enclosed, locked area that can’t be viewed openly. Some counties and municipals limit cannabis growth to 12 plants per household.

Maine is currently in a recount process so there is no official law in place for marijuana growing.

California, Massachusetts, and Nevada all allow 6 plants in their homes as long as the area is locked and out of view from the public when the legislation goes into effect.

Are people able to sell their own?

Businesses need to acquire a state license to legally sell marijuana for recreational use.

Are there any criminal penalties for growing too much or selling in any states?Criminal penalties apply on a per states basis, and with the introduction of the new legislation, it’s not clear on criminal penalties for illegal amounts of growth or unauthorised selling.

What are the basic things a person needs in order to grow their own?

For indoor growing, there is a lot of equipment needed for successful cannabis growth and we recommend that you visit www.thehydroponicscompany.us to view one of the grow tent packages, as purchasing individual equipment can be very confusing at times.

Are there any websites that provide instructions on how to do this?

At www.thehydroponicscompany.us we will be learning a PDF instruction on how to set up the grow tent and will be providing tips on how to successfully cultivate your garden.

What's the biggest challenge for anyone who wants to grow their own marijuana?

In order to grow high quality marijuana, an indoor grow tent is required, but the initial setup cost is not cheap. However, an indoor marijuana garden is very easy to manage and can easily make your money back in a few harvests.

Do you see any other states following suit?

Absolutely, many states have already legalised cannabis for medical used and every year more states are pushing for cannabis legalisation.

Any tips for people who want to grow their own?

Take the time to find the right grow tent, as the success of your harvest largely depends on it. Once set up, a grow tent will pretty much run itself and it’s much easier than taking care of a garden. Set yourself up for success from the start.

With cannabis laws different across state lines and still slightly complicated, it’s important that you are aware of the legality surrounding your actions. Following David’s advice will ensure that you can grow your own weed (in some states) and never risk any legal repurcussions.
