"You shall love whether you like it or not," states Javier Bardem in the first trailer for "To the Wonder." Bardem -- who plays a priest in the film -- could be speaking for director Terrence Malick. The reclusive auteur debuted "To the Wonder" at the Venice Film Festival in September, and though many critics gave his latest high marks, the film was also jeered.
"Booing a Terrence Malick film! Wow, almost as courageous and commendable as kicking Gandhi in the face," wrote Variety critic Justin Chang on Twitter. "Good job, guys."
"To the Wonder" is about love and relationships. Also, voice over: According to Deadline.com, Affleck "probably has less than 10 lines". The rest of "To the Wonder" is voice over from Affleck, Bardem, Olga Kurylenko and Rachel McAdams. Here's the monologue Bardem recites over the trailer in its entirety:
You shall love whether you like it or not. Emotions, they come and go like clouds. Love is not only a feeling; you shall love. To love is to run the risk of failure, the risk of betrayal. You fear your love has died; perhaps it is waiting to be transformed into something higher. Awaken the divine presence which sleeps in each man, each woman. Know each other in that love that never changes.
"To the Wonder" is out in the U.K. on Feb. 22, 2013; the film arrives in U.S. theaters on Apri 12, 2013.
