Three young actresses are in the running to play Tom Cruise's leading lady in his upcoming rogue hero film, "One Shot." In other words, three young actresses are competing for a chance at true, ubiquitous stardom.
Cruise will play Jack Reacher, the mountain of an ex-army cop who stars in the Lee Child's hit book series, in the big screen adaptation of "One Shot." Sent to investigate the mysteries behind five murders in a small Indiana town, Reacher's female opposite in the film is a lawyer and the daughter of the district attorney.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, up-and-comers Haley Atwell, Alexa Davalos and Rosamund Pike are auditioning for the role, as the studio searches for an under-the-radar potential star to play alongside Cruise.
Atwell is perhaps best known in America; the 29-year old played Peggy Carter, the tough love interest of Steve Rogers in this summer's hit, "Captain America," and was nominated for a Golden Globe for her work in the miniseries, "The Pillars of the Earth." She's also starred in the period drama, "The Duchess," and in the Woody Allen film, "Cassandra's Dream."
Davalos, also 29, is best known for her work in "Clash of the Titans," and "Defiance." Interestingly, Pike, 31, took Davalos' place as Andromeda in the upcoming "Clash of the Titans" sequel, one of up four movies she has out this year. She's already featured in "Johnny English Reborn," plays opposite Owen Wilson and Steve Martin in the comedy, "The Big Year." Pike will also feature in "The Sea," with Ciran Hinds. She's known best for her work in "Barney's Version" and "Made in Dagenham."
While Atwell read for the role, THR reports, it's not her preferred method of trying out for a film.
"When I met with the director of 'Captain America' [Joe Johnston], I hadn't seen the script, and I had to go meet him, and we spoke for like an hour," she recently told Esquire. "With a lot of those big films, they'll do that instead of an audition -- and I prefer them, because I love a chat. I've found the messier the meeting gets, the more successful. You vomit on someone's shirt, it's probably going to work in your favor. Because you shared something: an intimate moment of drunken behavior."
Cruise will next be seen singing some heavy metal in the star-studded big screen adaptation of the hit Broadway musical, "Rock of Ages."
