Tom Hanks Announces Mother's Death With An Emotional Tribute

The actor announced his mother's death just days after his 60th birthday.

Tom Hanks’ mother has died, he revealed Tuesday in an emotional tribute posted on social media. The actor, who just turned 60 on July 9, confirmed her passing with an old photo of his late mother, Janet Marylyn Frager. She was 84.

“This beauty? My mom. She was the difference in many lives. Many lives. We say goodbye to her today. Safe crossing, mom! Hanx,” the actor wrote on an Instagram post.

Frager worked as a hospital worker and had three more children with Hanks’ father, before the two divorced when Hanks was young. Hanks recalled her strength as a woman in an interview in Esquire earlier this year, noting she worked her way through college and “got out of unhappy unions and marriages on her own.”

He also posted a photo of the State Theatre in Red Bluff, California, sharing that he watched many movies there with his mother.

Hanks’ wife, Rita Wilson, who is also editor-at-large of Huff/Post50, shared her own tribute to her late mother-in-law Tuesday, calling Frager a “wonderful lady.”
