Toni Keller Investigation: Remains Not Postively Identified As Missing NIU Student

Remains Not Positively Identified As Missing NIU Student

Officials were unable to conclude whether or not human remains found near the Northern Illinois University campus were those of a missing student because they were so badly burned, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

NIU freshman Antinette "Toni" Keller vanished Oct. 14. Her death has been reclassified as a homicide investigation.

According to the Northern Star, though the remains were discovered Oct. 16, it was not known until Oct. 23 that they were human.

Police said they have talked to approximately 50 people in regards to the case. "This is a homicide investigation that hasn't been solved yet," DeKalb Police Chief Bill Feithen said. "There is a person out there that committed this. I won't say they're still in DeKalb. I won't say they aren't in another community. I will say they aren't in custody."
