Tony Harvey, Texas Southern University basketball coach, had his home burglarized in February when he was away on a road trip. According to The Houston Chronicle, two former players, Jasmine R. Payne and Whithworth W. Treasure, have been accused of stealing jewelry worth $94,000 from their former coach.
According to MyFoxHouston, court documents indicate that Harvey left his home for a road trip with the team on Feb. 16. On Feb. 20, Harvey received a phone call from his housekeeper who informed him that his home had been burglarized. Harvey returned the next day and told police that more than $534,000 worth of items were missing.
Police said that the 22-year-old Payne and 23-year-old Treasure were caught by a surveillance camera at a jewelery story trying to sell the stolen items for $3,600. The employee was said to have refused to buy them and the owner reportedly told police that the items were worth $94,000.
The two former TSU players were charged with third-degree theft and are being held without bond.
Harvey took over as the TSU basketball coach in 2008 after distinguishing himself as one of the top recruiting assistant coaches in the country. The Tigers are currently 13-16 overall and 12-5 in SWAC conference play.
Payne was the leading scorer on the TSU women's team during the 2009-2010 season. Whitworth also enjoyed a stellar 2009-2010 season, playing for coach Harvey on the men's team. Neither played during the 2010-2011 season.
