The No. 1 Way To Find Your Authentic Self

How do we become our most authentic selves? According to life coach Tony Robbins, the number one rule to becoming more authentic is to be more spontaneous. The best-selling author tells Oprah during his upcoming “SuperSoul Sunday” interview that being authentic means living in the moment and breaking the mold every once in a while.

“It’s allowing yourself to be spontaneous instead of responding to how you think you’re supposed to be,” Robbins says.

Spontaneity helps us grow, he explains. “You define yourself not only by who you think you are, but who you’re not. And those definitions were usually made 10, 20, 30, 40 years ago. And we rarely upgrade them unless we have an abrupt experience that makes us re-evaluate our lives,” he says.

Robbins suggests asking these questions and making conscious decisions: “Who am I today? What do I stand for? What am I here for? What am I here to give? What am I here to learn? What am I here to grow? What am I here to enjoy?

“And then to spontaneously try things,” he adds.

That last question ― What am I here to enjoy? ― is a big one. “I think the most important decision is saying, ‘I’m going to enjoy this moment right now. It’s the only thing I have that’s real and life’s too short to suffer,’” Robbins says.

“And if I just keep doing that with each moment,” he continues, “things unfold in a way that’s – as you know – beyond magnificent.”

Tony Robbins and his wife, Sage, will appear on SuperSoul Sunday on Sunday, August 14, at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. ET on OWN.
