Today is the first Monday in May - and that can only mean one thing. It’s the 2017 Met Gala, fashion’s most star studded, glitzy (and extremely expensive) night of the year, reserved for only the rich and famous.
This year, the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s annual Costume Institute exhibition is in honour of Rei Kawakubo and her brand Comme des Garcons. The legendary Japanese designer, who also founded avant garde department store Dover Street Market, will be the first living icon since Yves Saint Laurent to have an exhibition at the Met based on her, in what is bound to be another steller presentation by curator Andrew Bolton.
"Rei Kawakubo is one of the most important and influential designers of the past 40 years. By inviting us to rethink fashion as a site of constant creation, recreation, and hybridity, she has defined the aesthetics of our time,” Bolton told Vogue.com in anticipation for 2017’s big exhibition.
With rumours swirling that this year Anna Wintour has been even more strict with her celebrity guest list and the number of plus-ones invited to the gala, the Met really is the hottest ticket in town for those lucky enough to receive an invitation. And you sure do have to dress to impress fashion’s most formidable figure head, Wintour. Over the years we have seen incredible looks on the red carpet; from Rihanna’s ginormous Gui Pei yellow cape, Beyonce’s crystallized Givenchy gowns and Sarah Jessica Parker’s extravagant head pieces to Zayn and Gigi matching metallic outfits. But who was the fairest of them all?
