I spent the last ten days driving across the country, off the grid, disconnected, unable to watch anything online. While I'm very thankful that the major news story I missed last week was the Mel Gibson meltdown/tirade, which I couldn't care less about and really doesn't qualify as "news," I did miss some hilarious videos. Oh, and I guess they fixed the oil spill? And now, here are the top five funniest videos I missed while I was away.
Of course, while I'm on a cross-country road trip, this trailer for a movie in which Robert Downey Jr. and Zach Galifianakis go on a cross-country road trip comes out. Directed by The Hangover's Todd Phillips, this one came out of nowhere and looks very promising.
If there was one man other than Mel Gibson who dominated the internet last week, it was the Old Spice guy, Isaiah Mustafa. Not only did a second commercial appear on YouTube, but the actor aided a fan's marriage proposal on Twitter and even went on Good Morning America to give Obama leadership advice. But perhaps the funniest entry in this remarkably sale-sy meme was a video put out by Brigham Young University to promote their library. I didn't know that universities needed to advertise their libraries, but here they managed to find a black Mormon who could do a solid impression with the help of some strong production values.
College Humor caused childhood emotions to come rushing back into focus last week with their video about "Very Special Episodes" of sitcoms. Since the Millennial Generation has a particularly strong affection for 90's sitcoms like Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Saved By the Bell, and Full House, this video resonated across the internet.
Meanwhile, The Onion's "Today Now!" made a slight tweak to the classic story of being raised by wolves, with this report on a young girl who was raised by Wolf Blitzer. I don't know where they found this girl, but she does an eerie Blitzer impression that will make you feel almost as uncomfortable as you do when you watch the real one.
Finally, last week's ESPY's (the oxy-moronic "sports award show") had more genuinely funny moments then I would have expected. Some highlights included host Seth Meyers' "Brett Favre is old" jokes that Mrs. Favre did not find funny and Tracy Morgan's lost audition tape for Invictus. But hot on the heels of Lebron James' epically ridiculous hour-long ESPN special "The Decision," Steve Carell and Paul Rudd's parody was the winner of the night.
