Happy Thursday everyone, here's my Top 5 for October 6, 2011 from Len Berman at www.ThatsSports.com.

1. Quick Hits

  • The Yankees and Tigers will decide their best of five series tonight at Yankee Stadium. 8:00 pm Eastern. TBS.
  • St. Louis beat Philadelphia 5-3 to even their series two games apiece. Game 5 will be played tomorrow night in Philadelphia.
  • Arizona beat Milwaukee 10-6 to also force a 5th tomorrow night in Milwaukee.
  • Michael Vick says the "Dream Team" label for his Philadelphia Eagles is now dead. I'm guessing their 1-3 record has something to do with that.
  • Tiger Woods makes yet another return today at the Frys.com Open in Northern California.

2. Steve Jobs
1955-2011

You're probably reading the Top 5 today because of Steve Jobs. Incredible how one person affected all our lives. He permeated sports in so many ways from the important, getting information quickly. To the trivial. How could athletes ignore the world before they stuck their iPods in their ears in the locker room before the game? Then there was his 1984 Super Bowl commercial.

He changed the very concept of "Super Bowl commercials" forever. The word visionary doesn't begin to scratch the surface.

3. One Game Season

Is there anything more exciting in sports than a one-game season? And now we've got three of them. Tonight in New York and tomorrow in Philadelphia and Milwaukee. An entire season, if not a franchise's history can be determined by one pitch, one bounce of the ball. Who says baseball is boring?

4. What the Puck?

Are you ready for some hockey? The NHL season gets underway tonight with three games. This year's big issue will be head shots, and that's a good thing. The Rangers waived the league's #1 pest, Sean Avery. Don't teams need agitators? Before you know it they'll turn hockey into a skill-based, clean and exciting sport.

5. On the Clock

Good times at the Hawaii-Louisiana Tech football game. It took them 22 minutes to sort out a video replay. How much fun is that? It extended the length of the game to four hours. You go to a college football game and a Yankees/Red Sox game breaks out.

Happy Birthday: Miracle Mets catcher Jerry Grote. 69.
Bonus Birthday: Leaving Las Vegas actress Elisabeth Shue. 48.

Today in Sports: At game 4 of the World Series at Wrigley Field, Chicago tavern owner William Sianis is asked to leave with his pet goat, even though both had tickets. Thus the Cubs "Curse of the Billy Goat." 1945.
Bonus Event: Eight is enough. Elizabeth Taylor gets married for the final time to Larry Fortensky. 1991.
