Dwayne Johnson Is Forbes' Top-Grossing Movie Star Of 2013

The Year's Top-Grossing Movie Star Is ...

Dwayne Johnson was the rock of the box office in 2013, if Forbes' new list of the highest-grossing actors is any indication.

Johnson's starring vehicles -- "Snitch," "G.I. Joe: Retaliation," "Pain & Gain" and "Fast & Furious 6" -- combined to earn $1.3 billion in global ticket sales, a figure that doesn't include "Empire State," Johnson's straight-to-DVD crime drama co-starring Liam Hemsworth and Emma Roberts.

Robert Downey Jr. topped last year's list thanks to the $1.5 billion intake associated with "Marvel's The Avengers," but the actor couldn't reclaim his title this year. Johnson, whose only 2012 movie was "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island," did not appear on the 2012 list.

This year, Downey Jr. took the No. 2 spot. His only 2013 project was "Iron Man 3," which accrued $1.2 billion worldwide.

The third spot on the list belonged to an actor who didn't star in a big-scale action flick: Steve Carell. His $964 million total came largely from "Despicable Me 2," which remains the second-highest grossing film of the year, with $919 million. Carell also starred in the indie comedy "The Way Way Back" and the comedy flop "The Incredible Burt Wonderstone," both of which took in right around $23 million at the box office. Carell did not appear on last year's list, and his 2013 total will rise thanks to the release of "Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues," which is out on Dec. 18.

The other two names in the top five were also nowhere to be found on 2012's rankings. With $887 million, Vin Diesel's "Fast & Furious 6" and "Riddick" make him the fourth-highest grossing star, while Sandra Bullock's "The Heat" and "Gravity" give her $862 and the fifth-place spot.

With the "Twilight" franchise having expired last year, none of its stars return to the list. Kristen Stewart was in second place last year but starred in no movies in 2013. Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner also failed to reprise their box-office success (a hard feat anyway when your movie takes in $830 million worldwide). Other stars present last year but absent from the newest rankings are Christian Bale, Daniel Craig, Andrew Garfield, Will Smith and Mark Wahlberg. Jennifer Lawrence, this year's only woman other than Bullock, appears on both lists.
