President Barack Obama, several of the Republican presidential nominees and other politicians are among public figures weighing in on the killing of Florida teenager Trayvon Martin.
"If I had a son, he'd look like Trayvon," Obama said during a press conference Friday. The president made the comments after receiving pressure from black leaders to make a statement.
The case has brought national attention to the Stand Your Ground law, which says a person can use deadly force rather than retreat during a fight. Police used the law as justification for not arresting shooter George Zimmerman, who said he acted in self-defense when he shot the unarmed Martin.
Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum have both argued the Stand Your Ground law didn't apply to Zimmerman's actions.
"The young man apparently was not following the person who's being investigated," Gingrich said. "Apparently, the shooter was following the young man. That's not a stand your own ground, that's a chase the other person into their ground. And I think you're going to find the law, as interpreted normally, doesn't apply to this case."
