Key Dates In The Trayvon Martin Murder Case

The trial of George Zimmerman, set to kick off with jury selection on Monday, is one of the biggest court proceedings to take place in Florida since Casey Anthony was acquitted of murdering her child.

Zimmerman shot and killed 17-year-old Trayvon Martin as the latter was walking back to the home of his father's fiancee from a Sanford, Fla., convenience store with a bag of candy on the night of Feb. 26, 2012.

Defense attorneys argue that Zimmerman, then 28, was attacked by Martin while serving as a neighborhood watch volunteer. Zimmerman's camp contends the Hispanic American acted in self-defense when he shot the African-American teen in the chest at point-blank range. Prosecutors have deemed the slaying an instance of second-degree murder.

The case, which has been over a year in the making, has prompted allegations of racism and police corruption. While public opinion is mixed, there is no mistaking the fact that Martin’s killing and the circumstances thereof have captured headlines around the world.
