A suspect who led San Francisco police on a harrowing early morning car chase died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound following a six-hour standoff on Treasure Island's shore.
At about 11 p.m. Monday evening, SFPD officers received a 911 call about an armed adult male in a stolen vehicle. The car was soon located in downtown San Francisco near the intersection of Bush and Mason streets.
As officers followed the car, the suspect sped off, running red lights. Police followed in pursuit and the suspect fired his gun back. No officers were injured.
As the chase continued, the suspect drove onto the Bay Bridge, exiting on Treasure Island. He bailed from the car and ran to the island's shore, threatening to kill himself. Police attempted to negotiate with the man to no avail. The standoff lasted for hours, until, at about 5 a.m., police heard a single gunshot and moved in to find the suspect suffering from a self-inflicted wound. He was soon pronounced dead by paramedics at the scene.
Police told the San Jose Mercury News that the man may be 29-year old Duncan Phillips, who is wanted in connection with a string of robberies and a carjackings in Benecia last week.
Due to the standoff, police shot down all access to the island for hours. During that time, the Red Cross was called in to assist anyone displaced by the closure.
The ramps onto the Bay Bridge reopened later Tuesday morning.
