The mood on “The Daily Show” last night during its live election night special was darker than it was droll.
When host Trevor Noah went live around 11 p.m. EST, then-Republican candidate Donald Trump was leading in the polls and had just won North Carolina, a crucial swing state.
Noah admitted he was “very much afraid” of what the outcome of the presidential election would be.
“This is it, the end of the presidential race, and it feels like the end of the world."”

“This is it, the end of the presidential race, and it feels like the end of the world,” he said in the opening of his monologue. “I don’t know if you came to the right place for jokes tonight, because this is the first time throughout this entire race where I’m officially shitting my pants. I genuinely do not understand how America can be this disorganized or this hateful.”
Noah’s monologue came just a day after the comedian warned America that not voting, or choosing to elect Trump, was empowering the Ku Klux Klan.
Noah did attempt to tell a few jokes last night, but most had bleak undertones.
For instance, he joked that he had prepared props for viewers as breaking news came in, but then said, “now the news is just breaking me.”
Noah did leave his audience with a little bit of hope, however:
”You can be dejected, you can be sad, but I will say this — don’t let it turn into fear,” Noah said. “Because that is the thing Donald Trump has used to get his side to do something that they never should have done. Stay strong, stay positive.”
