Fired FBI director James Comey affirmed on Thursday that Robert Mueller, the special counsel leading an independent investigation into ties between President Donald Trump’s campaign and Russian officials, is examining whether Trump obstructed justice.

During his testimony before the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, Comey said it was not his place to say whether Trump’s request that Comey stop investigating former national security adviser Michael Flynn’s contacts with Russia constituted an obstruction of justice.

“I don’t think it’s for me to say whether the conversation I had with the president was an effort to obstruct,” Comey said.

But Comey said he was “sure” that Mueller was looking into the matter as part of his probe.
