Trump, Taxes And Moral Turpitude

Elect a clown, expect a circus.

Can You Believe?

Can you believe that the GOP’s self-proclaimed “deficit hawks” all voted to proceed to a tax bill that will blow a $1.4 trillion hole in the deficit?

Can you believe that Mick Mulvaney, illegally installed as Director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, would try to buy his staff’s loyalty with donuts after fighting to block their agency’s mission and very existence?

Can you believe that Trump would retweet virulent anti-Muslim videos from a British ultranationalist hate group that’s truly beyond the fringe? Or that he’d use a racial slur at the ceremony honoring the heroic Navajo Code Talkers? Of course you can. Trump’s whole political career is built on racism and xenophobia.

Can you believe that Trump now says the Access Hollywood tape was a fake after apologizing for it in 2016? Or that he’d again question President Obama’s birth certificate? Of course you can. Elect a clown, expect a circus.

Hits and Misses – the week’s best and worst moves

Hit of the Week: Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi calling Trump’s bluff, cancelling their White House budget meeting after Trump taunted them in an early-morning tweet and said “I don’t see a deal!”

Miss of the Week: John McCain’s support of the GOP tax bill. Perhaps Grover Norquist knew what was coming when he said early this week that McCain had already “checked the maverick box” with his vote against the GOP health care bill.

Hot Race of the Week

With less than two weeks to go, the Alabama Senate race between Doug Jones and Judge Roy Moore is a toss-up. Though many Republican senators have called on Moore to step aside, they’ve done nothing to stop him – and now Trump is working to push Moore over the finish line. Over the past year, GOP politicians and their supporters have repeatedly sunk to new lows, but if Alabama’s so-called “values voters” send a child molester to the Senate, they’ll set the gold standard for hypocrisy.

Finally...

The GOP tax bill is a disaster for our nation and our people, but there may be a silver lining: In its rush to pass the bill, the Republican Congress is giving voters almost a full year to understand and digest what’s happened to them. By November 2018, the enormity of this scam will be obvious, and the swing voters who helped the GOP take over Washington will realize they’ve been had. Then, if we dig deep and work hard, we’ll have a chance to take back the Congress and begin to take back our country.
