At last month's GOP CNBC debates, Ted Cruz accused the moderators of attempting to cause a cage fight among the candidates. Believe me -- they don't need any help, as demonstrated by Trump's latest attack on Ben Carson.
There has been considerable doubt cast upon Carson's assertions about his violent outbursts as a child, his high school rescue of white students following the assassination of Martin Luther King, his being offered a full scholarship to West Point, and his tale of self-proclaimed honesty while at Yale.
In a speech yesterday, Trump pounced upon Carson's aggressive past, which Carson claims includes attempting to hit his mother with a hammer and to stab a kid with a knife. Remember "Lizzy Borden took an axe and gave her mother forty wacks. . ."? Here's my version for Ben Carson:
Ben Carson took a hammer
To his mother, he tried to slam her,
And when he didn't get the job done
He tried to stab a kid just for fun.
Trump asserted that Carson has a "pathological disease" and stated "If you're pathological, there's no cure for that. Then Trump took it one step further and added, "If you're a child molester there's no cure. They can't stop you."
And Trump's disdain wasn't limited to Carson. He also asked "How stupid are the people from Iowa?" I wouldn't think it is the best game plan to question the intelligence of the very voters you are trying to woo. Trump further inquired, "How stupid are the people of the country to believe this crap?"
Sounds to me like someone was having a bad hair day.
Trump mocked Carson's anecdote about his attempt to stab another boy, which was thwarted by the victim's belt buckle. Trump said "It hit the belt. And the knife broke. Give me a break."
Gee, comparing a guy to a child molester doesn't hit the belt -- it hits below the belt.
Trump asked "Anybody with a knife wanna try it on me? Believe me, it ain't gonna work."
If I were Trump, I wouldn't be posing questions like that.
Footnote: Carson's reported response about Trump was "Pray for him." It was not specified what Carson's prayer would be for Trump, but I have a hunch this is the music he will be playing at the prayer service.
