The Truth About Pit Bulls (VIDEO)

Pit Bulls Are Dogs Too, You Know (VIDEO)

This post is part of HuffPost's ongoing #PitBullWeek coverage.

Pit bulls are just like any other dog -- they are slobbery, sweet creatures who want to be your best friend.

"We need to talk about pit bull-type dogs the way we talk about any other homeless dogs -- they are just big strong lovable affable animals that need a home," Matt Bershadker, president and CEO of the ASPCA, says in the video above.

HuffPost went to the people who understand this misunderstood breed the best -- adoption leaders. We spoke with small boutique organizations like Badass Brooklyn Animal Rescue and nationwide efforts like the ASPCA. While each of the organizations have varying methods for finding animals a forever home, they all had one message in common -- pits are just like any other dog.

Watch the video above to get to know some of the available pit bulls in the New York City area and to see common myths about the breed busted.

HuffPost Green is launching a week-long, community-driven effort to bust the myths and raise awareness about pit bulls, a maligned "breed" that often bears the brunt of dated, discriminatory legislation that can make it near impossible for these dogs to find a forever home.
