The Boston bombing suspects may have been planning a trip to New York when they carjacked a Mercedes Benz SUV last Thursday.
A senior United States official tells The New York Times the Tsarnaev brothers admitted to the Benz owner, who they briefly held hostage, that they had plans to go to New York City.
It's not known whether the two elaborated on these plans to their victim.
A police source tells the Daily News, however, that the hostage only heard the brothers speaking in a foreign language, and could only understand one English word, which may have been "Manhattan."
NBC's Pete Williams also said the carjacking victim "told the police investigators after this episode, when they finally got to him — he is the one who called 911 — that they let him out of the car and didn’t kill him because he wasn’t an American.”
On Sunday, Boston police commissioner Edward Davis pointed to the amount of explosives and ammunition uncovered in Watertown-- the scene of a wild shootout between the Tsarnaevs and authorities-- as reason to believe the suspects were planning more attacks.
Soon after news broke of the Boston bombings, the NYPD increased security around New York City landmarks and subway stations.
In one 24-hour span after the bombings, the NYPD responded to 77 reports of suspicious packages.
Since his capture on Friday, 19-year-old Dzhokhar Tsarnaev has been in intensive care at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. He is reportedly now awake and responding to questions in writing.
His older brother, Tamerlan, was killed during the shootout in Watertown.
The Boston Marathon explosions claimed the lives of three individuals, including an 8-year-old boy, and injured nearly 180 people.
