Family members of convicted Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev arrived in Boston this week, and the glaring spotlight has sent the relatives searching for privacy.
Six of Tsarnaev's relatives have relocated from a Hampton Inn in Revere, Massachusetts, to an undisclosed location outside Boston because of the unwanted media attention, Revere Police Chief Joseph Cafarelli told The Boston Herald.
The group, which WCVB reported did not include his parents, had checked into the hotel on Thursday as prosecutors finished presenting why they believe the 21-year-old deserved the death penalty for the attack two years ago that killed three spectators and injured 264 others at the race.
The jury has already convicted Tsarnaev of 30 charges related to the bombing and the separate killing of a police officer, but on Monday the defense will begin trying to convince jurors to sentence him to life without parole.
In previous statements, lead attorney Judy Clarke has said Tsarnaev was under the influence of his older brother Tamerlan, who planned the double bombing and forced Dzhokhar to help pull it off. Tamerlan, 26, died in Watertown, Massachusetts, in a gunfight with police hours before his brother's capture.
It's unknown if Tsarnaev's family members arrived merely to support him in court with his life on the line, or if some members will be called to testify on his behalf. Tsarnaev has extended family in southern Russia, sisters living in New Jersey and an uncle in Maryland. So far, no relatives have ventured into court.
While prosecutors presented their case last week, jurors heard testimony from the relatives of people killed in the bombing as well as statements from survivors who lost limbs.
