Twentynine Palms Marine Base Accident Leaves Numerous Injured

More Than 20 Injured In Training Exercise At California Marine Base

A field training accident on the Marine base in Twentynine Palms in Southern California left more than 20 Marines with inhalation related injuries on Thursday evening, fire officials said.

All of the 22 Marines and sailors of 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment that were injured were in stable condition, a statement from the Marines said. An official with the base told NBC News that no one had died.

A desk sergeant at the base said that it appeared there was an extinguisher discharged during an Integrated Training Exercise, NBC San Diego reported. A fire extinguisher in an Assault Amphibious Vehicle accidentally went off, Hlad reported.

In January, two Marines were killed in a helicopter crash at the base. The Twentynine Palms Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center is located outside the city of the same name in southern San Bernardino County, California.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
