Twitter's Top Stories Of 2011

Twitter's Most Memorable Moments Of 2011

As part of its year-end review, Twitter is looking back at the year's most memorable moments, as told through the 60 billion tweets posted by microbloggers around the world.

This retrospective is more than just a list of the most retweeted or newsworthy tweets. Twitter has highlighted the most powerful, inspiring and human events from 2011 by creating a special collection of stories. "Instead of attempting to identify the 'most important' Tweets of the year, we’re recognizing ten Tweets that are emblematic of the many resonant moments that happened first on Twitter—or could only happen on Twitter," explains a post on the Twitter blog.

Twitter debuted its participatory Stories collection in early November as a way for tweeters to showcase their favorite moments on the site. "Each story reminds us of the humanity behind Tweets that make the world smaller," Twitter said of the project in a post on the company's official blog.

The list of top 10 stories are just one part in the microblogging platform's year-end series. Over the month of December, Twitter will release four more highlights from 2011.

Take a look through the slideshow (below) for a look at the 10 tweets that embody what Twitter sees as the platform's standout moments of 2011. Then, check our our slideshow showcasing Twitter's most powerful tweets from last year.
