Tyrone Lawson Shooting: Mother Of Teen Killed After Basketball Game Sues CPS, Chicago State

Mother Of Teen Killed After Basketball Game Sues CPS, CSU

A lawsuit has been filed almost exactly one year after the shooting death of a 17-year-old boy in a Chicago State University parking lot after a prep basketball game.

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, Pamela Wright Young, the mother of 17-year-old Morgan Park High student Tyrone Lawson, filed a lawsuit on Thursday against CSU and Chicago Public Schools.

Young argues CSU and CPS did not adequately secure the Jan. 16, 2013 game between Morgan Park and Simeon Career Academy, after which Lawson was fatally shot in the parking lot outside the CSU Jones Convocation Center.

Officials did not properly screen attendees for weapons or prepare for an overcapacity crowd, the lawsuit alleges.

"Tyrone’s mother thought he would be safe at a neutral location chosen for its security policies," Lawson's family's attorney Martin Dolan said in a statement to the Sun-Times.

Dolan told ABC Chicago that no security was present outside the basketball game, though all Morgan Park students had received a letter earlier in the school year that security plans had been modified to "maintain a safe environment during sporting events" after a fight resulting in a stabbing broke out during a Morgan Park-Simeon football game earlier in the school year.

Two men in their 30s -- brothers Michael McNabb and Stephen Gilbert -- were charged with Lawson's murder shortly after the shooting last year, the Chicago Tribune reports, and pleaded not guilty.
