She may be the leading lady of mainstream blockbuster films like "Batman" and "Kill Bill," but Uma Thurman had an unconventional upbringing. Named after a Hindu goddess, Thurman was raised Buddhist by her professor father and model mother. Her family split their time between Woodstock and India, with the Dalai Lama staying at their home on occasion. Thurman started modeling as a 15-year-old and she got her first movie role three years later. In 1994 she had a breakthrough when she played a drug-addicted gangster's girlfriend in Quentin Tarantino's "Pulp Fiction."
There's no doubt her unique upbringing influenced her eclectic sense of style. In this 1990 photo Thurman wears a simple white dress layered with a black camisole and a long beaded necklace.
