Home Plate Umpire Tackles Fan Running On Field

It seems like the Baltimore Orioles' biggest problem so far this season has nothing to do with the actual quality of play on the field, but rather fans coming to their games and running onto the field. Perhaps stadium security has been in such disbelief that the O's have been hovering around first place in the A.L. East all season that they have stopped paying attention to the mischievous fans (Seriously, even a small boy managed to get on the field during an O's-White Sox game in Chicago).

The problem arose again on Friday when the O's hosted the Oakland Athletics at Camden Yards for the first of a three-game series. In the middle of the seventh inning stretch, a fan bypassed Camden Yards security and ran onto the field. The shirtless fan managed to run all the way from the outfield to third base and slide head-first into home plate, where umpire Jeff Kellogg was stationed for the night.

As the man got to his feet and celebrated the imaginary run, Kellogg was eager to resume play and took matters into his own hands, tackling the fan from behind.

A’s manager Bob Melvin gained a new-found respect for Kellogg, who said after the game that he "thought it was terriffic" when the ump tackled the fan.

Well done, Kellogg. Well done.
