Umpires Lost Track Of The Pitch Count, Used Replay, And Still Got It Wrong (VIDEO)

WATCH: Umps Still GetWrong After Replay

The umpires at Tropicana Field on Tuesday night embarrassed themselves when they lost track of the pitch count during the fifth inning of the Rays' game with the Twins. The error happened during Rays shortstop Yunel Escobar's at-bat. The crew decided to look at the video replay, but still ended up getting the count wrong and Escobar was eventually called out on strikes when he should have been credited with a walk.

Escobar appeared to check his swing on Twins reliever Samuel Deduno's 2-1 pitch, but after the ball deflected off catcher Kurt Suzuki's glove, it looked like it might have been called foul. He checked with home plate umpire Paul Schrieber, and the scoreboard read a 2-2 count, but the at-bat continued without a clear decision. The next pitch was a called strike and Deduno looked like he thought he struck Escobar out. But the at-bat continued, making it seem like the count was 3-2. The next pitch was a called a ball, but it wasn't ruled a walk.

That's when the crew looked at the replay and somehow ruled that the count was 3-2. Escobar struck out on the next pitch despite taking four balls. Major League Baseball was quick to say a mistake had been made.

"An error was made when replay officials and supervisors mistakenly thought one of the pitches was a foul ball when it was actually a ball," the league said in a statement, via CBSSports.com.

The blunder didn't have an impact on the game as the Rays went on to win 7-3.
