U.S. Unemployment: Putting Jobs, Layoffs Into Perspective [GRAPHIC]

In the month of July, the U.S. economy added 117,000 jobs, a small relief after the previous month's announcement that the economy had added only 18,000 jobs total. Still, look at the below infographic by Visual.ly, and it's easy to see how and where the U.S. job market is suffering. Indeed, while the overall unemployment rate may have slightly fallen to 9.1 percent from 9.2 percent over the past month, the number of unemployed persons is still estimated at around 13.9 million -- twice the population of the entire state of Washington.

Not all industries are created equal, however. And certain sector experienced marked improvement in the month of July. Among construction workers, for example, the unemployment rate fell to 13.6 percent from 17.3 percent in June, or over 20 percent. Government workers, on the other hand, fared much worse.
