University Of Wisconsin-Madison Investigating Fraternity After Racial Slur Incident (VIDEO)

UW-Madison Fraternity Under Fire For Racial Slur Incident

The University of Wisconsin-Madison is currently investigating an alleged incident in which members of a campus fraternity yelled racial slurs and threw a bottle at two African-American students, the Wisconsin State Journal reports.

The Delta Upsilon fraternity was placed on emergency suspension last week after two African-American women reported that as they were walking across the frat's lakeshore property on the morning of Friday, March 16, a handful of men partying on the porch yelled "racial slurs and class-oriented taunts" at them before launching a glass bottle, according to Channel 3000.

UW-Madison Dean of Students Lori Berquam and Vice Provost for Diversity and Climate Damon Williams said in a joint statement on Thursday that report was "deeply troubling," according to the station. The same day, Delta Upsilon Fraternity Executive Director Justin Kirk issued a statement calling the alleged incident "incongruent with the mission and values of Delta Upsilon Fraternity."

The recent allegations came just two weeks after the fraternity ended a months long "alcohol probation" period stemming from a September underage drinking incident, the Wisconsin State Journal reports. In November 2009, fraternity members were found guilty of using homophobic slurs against a performer at a Greek-sponsored event.

A senior student who spoke to the Journal said that the Delta Upsilon investigation follows an incident last summer when students hung a dark-colored, life-size Spiderman doll from a balcony, which has resulted in increased racial tension on campus.

Administrators have now said that they are working on a better system for students at the university to report incidents of bias and discrimination and plan to institute a new system for addressing allegations.
