Valentine's day is almost here so today we are making Valentine's Dog Treats! Today we are making Marble Heart shaped DIY dog treats! Please be sure to check with your vet before feeding anything to your dog. Let's make some treats!
Valentine's Dog Treats | Marble Hearts
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 Cup Whole Wheat Flour
- 1 tsp Baking Powder
- 1/4 Cup Carob Powder
- 1/2 Cup Rolled Oats
- 1 Tbsp Flax Seed (optional)
- 1/2 Cup Water
- 1 Tbsp Honey
- 1 Egg
- 2 Tablespoons Beet Juice
If you don't have beet juice, you can use a bit of red food coloring as well. The flax seed is optional because some dogs have issues with digesting whole seeds.
Directions
Preheat your oven to 300 degrees Fahrenheit. In a large bowl mix together flour, baking powder, oats, flax seed and set aside. In a large bowl mix together water, honey and the egg.
Slowly add the dry ingredients to the wet, and mix them together for just a few moments. Now take the dough out (it might be sticky), and separate it into two equal sized balls. Place 1 ball back in the mixer and add the carob powder. You may also need to add a bit more water. Mix until a nice dough ball is formed. Remove and set aside.
Now take your other dough ball and put it back in your bowl and add the beet juice. If the dough becomes to wet, add more flour until it is no longer sticky. Kneed into a nice ball of dough.
We are going for a marbled treat look. Flour your surface, take a small ball of dough of each color, and kneed them together in your hands. As you roll out your dough, you should see a marble look as they mix together. Roll your dough out to 1/4 inch. Cut out your hearts and place them onto your cookie sheet. Repeat until all of your dough is gone.
Bake these treats 25 - 30 minutes. After that, turn you oven off and let the treats sit inside. This will help dry them out a bit more. These treats don't tend to get super crunchy, but the longer you leave them in the oven, the more crunchy they will be. Once your oven is cooled, you can pull out the treats!
As an optional step, I used candy melting discs in pink and red and drizzled a bit on top of the cookies for extra color.
