Veterans Excel at Planning

Every successful mission in the Military starts with a Plan. Being able to properly lay out all the areas that are important and what needs to be addressed within them with associated timelines is very important. Now keep in mind even the best laid plans will vary as they are actually executed, you will find things you didn't know that you didn't know. Many people get hung up on trying to cross all the T's and Dot all the I's before they move forward. The most important part is to map out all the areas that will need your focus to grow and some amount of significant attention through the process of transitioning. These can include items in the various areas but are not limited to the following:

  • Housing
  • Family
  • Medical
  • Industry you plan to work in
  • Education
  • Financials
  • Geographic location you want to live

Ensure that your plans are tied to your Vision. This will help ensure that the plans you are making will coincide with and support your future. The action plans you set forth as part of your plan must be measurable and achievable in a specific time frame. If you can't measure your results along the way you will not know if you are on track to complete.

As you work through these areas in your mind be sure to document, document, document. With the passing of time and extensive planning you will start to forget what you had already spent time laying out. You can never start too early when it comes to planning as you want to give yourself time to let your plans rest awhile and revisit them to make sure they still make sense.

"The sooner you start planning your life, the sooner you will live the life you dream of." - Hans Glint

One common theme I hear from transitioning Veterans is that they wish they had started earlier. They had over simplified in their mind what it would take and all the areas that they would need to address in some fashion. There will be bumps in road and detours along the way so giving yourself time to address these things along the way and think through them properly is important to your success and the success of your family.
