Since all DCIS is not the same as regards malignant potential, Dr. Shelley Hwang describes a clinical trial that will hopefully provide some answers.

Where the DCIS contains hormone receptors, patients may be treated three months prior to surgery to monitor response to medical (hormonal) therapy and some may not even need surgery, or where a mastectomy may have been needed, it may be possible to conserve the breast.
