Teen Arrested In Beating Of 64-Year-Old Vietnam Vet

Authorities arrested a 15-year-old male for the alleged senseless beating of an elderly Vietnam War veteran in the Olny section of Philadelphia.

64-year-old Edward Schaefer -- who lost his eye during a grenade attack in Vietnam -- was walking on North 5th Street at approximately 6:12 p.m. on Jan. 17 when a group of six teenage males approached him from behind. The suspects proceeded to assault Schafer, "causing serious injuries to the head, face, and hand," the Philadelphia Police Department said.

The incident, captured on film and released by the Philadelphia Police Department, took place as Schaefer, a grandfather of four, was on his way to meet his wife, NBC Philadelphia reports.

The suspects fled the scene when a good Samaritan came to the rescue.

“He fell and that’s when I came across the street. When they saw me, that’s when they scattered,” Donald Jones told CBS Philadelphia. “He was trying to talk and I said, ‘No, stay there. I got you.’”

According to the YouTube video -- which has registered over 50,000 since being posted -- police describe the suspects as "Six unknown Black and Hispanic males, 16-18 years-of-age."

The 15-year-old is charged with attempted murder, assault, recklessly endagering another person, terroristic threats, and conspiracy, according to ABC.
