'Vikings': Ragnar And The Earl In A Duel To The Death

There were certainly some major developments on "Vikings" as the freshman series closed one chapter and kicked off another. Ragnar Lothbrok challenged the Earl to a duel. Though he could have declined, the Earl took him up on his offer. He clearly wanted to finish off Ragnar to finally be rid of this growing thorn in his side.

And while Ragnar is the star of the show, it wasn't readily apparent who would win the duel. TVOvermind points out that Ragnar still hadn't fully recovered. "Considering Ragnar's wounds, it shouldn't be as daunting of a task as taking on a healthy Lothbrok would be," they wrote.

But Ragnar did prove victorious, becoming the Earl himself after the defeat of his former chieftain. And so, "Vikings" said goodbye to Gabriel Byrne as the Earl, while Ragnar sat upon the throne. But treachery almost immediately started to build around him, and from one of those closest to him.

Ragnar's brother approached the former Earl's wife and asked her if she'd like to be wed to another Earl. He clearly intended to take his brother down and assume leadership. Heavy is the head that wears the crown.

The plotting and scheming continues on "Vikings," Sundays at 10 p.m. ET on History.
