A new video from "Funny Or Die" uses a cast of villains to show some rape laws across the country are actually just plain "evil."
In the clip, a group of villains plots how to destroy a superhero called "Captain Brave" along with the city where he lives. One of them suggests destroying untested rape kits after six months, which is actually something that Massachusetts currently does.
When his fellow evil-doers respond that's kind of messed up, the villain says, "Hey, I'm just trying to think of the most evil things."
He goes on to suggest denying access to counselors for sexual assault survivors, or deny them access to their own police reports, or force victims to pay for their own rape kit. The other villains are incredulous, saying they want to do "evil things" that are "within reason."
"We don't have to do anything, these things are already happening in many states!" he exclaims.
"The goal of this video is to draw attention to the outrageous lack of basic rights sexual assault survivors have in the United States," said actress Erin Richards, who plays the villains' leader, in a statement.
The video is trying to bolster support for a House resolution urging states to adopt basic rights for sexual assault victims, like prompt testing of rape kits and a new Senate bill that would require the free preservation of rape kits for the duration of the statute of limitations.
"Funny Or Die" worked with Rise, a nonprofit founded by Amanda Nguyen, who discovered she has to file a special request every six months to prevent Massachusetts from destroying her rape kit.
