This story’s ending is so happy it will make you wag your tail.
Kala and Keira, two shelter dogs who were set to die but saved after a photo of them hugging went viral, have officially been adopted. A pair of roommates and longtime friends from Georgia, named Wendy and Pam, saw the dogs’ story in the media and applied to give them a permanent home. On Oct. 25, the household of four started their new life together.
“Amazingly, even with all the publicity this summer, we had very few qualified adoption applications,” Cris Folchitto, a volunteer at Angels Among Us Pet Rescue -- the Alpharetta, Georgia-based group that posted the viral photo -- said in a press release. “But this is a great fit.”
The two pups were scheduled to be euthanized at a Georgia kill shelter in July, but were granted reprieve after the Angels Among Us, which works to save animals from kill shelters, shared a devastating picture of the pair hugging from behind bars on its Facebook page. Just about two hours after sharing the post, the group posted an update that, because of the overwhelming and supportive response, the dogs had been placed in a foster home.
When Pam heard Kala and Keira’s story, she had recently lost her two elderly dogs. And after hearing the two rescue pups still hadn’t found a permanent home, it seemed like the perfect time for her to submit an adoption application.
“It just fell together,” Pam said in a press release. “We turned our tears into smiles with these two young, playful dogs.”
Here’s to many more happy hugs for Kala and Keira! And look, the two besties are even ready to celebrate Halloween.
