Before you decide to travel abroad to volunteer, there are some things you should think about to make the trip as meaningful as possible.
Haley Nordeen, a sophomore at American University, spoke with HuffPost Live's Nancy Redd on Thursday about her experience in Guatemala as an aid worker. She said one of the most important things she did was figure out her goals for the trip before she left, which she encourages others to do.
"I saw Guatemala as a place I've always wanted to go to," Nordeen said. "I wanted to be immersed in the culture and really learn a lot while I was there. [I wanted to] have that transfer into the future where I can better serve through my career by having this experience as sort of a leaping-off point to start a career in international development."
