Volunteers Help Fill Voids In Philly Public Schools

Hundreds of volunteers across Philadelphia have stepped up to help students in the city of brotherly love make the grade this school year, reports the Philadelphia Daily News.

Individuals and volunteer groups have dedicated thousands of man-hours to pubic schools, like Overbrook High School, to help students with homework and counseling, and provide schools resources to address the city's high dropout rates.

The Daily News reports:

"I couldn't do it without them," said Overlook's Principal Ethelyn Young of the several volunteer groups that work in her school. "They bring energy, new ideas and passion. They're here 'round the clock. You can't beat that."

Most volunteers come from groups like City Year and Communities in Schools, but even parents and grandparents have helped out, assisting with paperwork and offering services throughout Overbrook and schools citywide.
