WASHINGTON -- D.C.-based hip-hop artist Head-Roc does not want Walmart on Georgia Avenue or anywhere else in the District of Columbia. With Empower DC, Head-Roc put out a video called "Keep DC Walmart Free!"
The video is shot largely on Georgia Avenue where one of four new D.C. Walmarts is planned and has a social-justice message.
"As a native Washingtonian, I am appalled that the Mayor and City Council are even considering incorporating a known economic/labor predator like Walmart as part of the solution to our city’s economic woes," Head-Roc said in a statement released on Wednesday. "It's sad we have to fight Walmart and our elected officials to keep them out -- or else it will be the end of Chocolate City."
In his video, Head-Roc accuses the world's largest retailer of mistreating women, importing "slave labor craftsmanship" which undercuts local businesses and not "spreading love" in the community.
Walmart is in the midst its own public relations offensive in D.C. Walmart Washington D.C. -- tagline: Helping D.C. Save Money And Live Better -- highlights the store's economic and other benefits to communities. D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier suggested that Walmart might fill a void for residents who find themselves without a place to buy guns in the District.
Walmart supporters are encouraged to sign an online petition.
