Charming Google Doodle Celebrates Legendary News Anchor Walter Cronkite

Nov. 4 would have been the newscaster's 100th birthday.

Today’s Google Doodle celebrates legendary news anchor Walter Cronkite.

Once known as “the most trusted man in America,” Cronkite would have celebrated his 100th birthday on Nov. 4, 2016. He died at the age of 92 in 2009.

Cronkite ushered in the era of broadcast news during a time when reporting and commentary were vastly different entities. When he shed a tear during his live reporting of President John F. Kennedy’s assassination, the display of emotion was considered controversial.

The Google Doodle above goes through key dates of Cronkite’s career, including the tearful moment on November 22, 1963.

The doodle also features illustrations of Cronkite’s joyful coverage of Apollo 11 landing on the moon on July 20, 1969, and is bookended with his first and last broadcast of the CBS Evening News, a program he anchored for 19 years.
